Additional Program Information

Competitive Program: Grades 5-8

Our goal is to give every child the opportunity to learn and develop their skill in the game of golf.  The competitive division (5th through 8th grade) will consist of four clinics that last 55 minutes followed by 6 weeks of competitive golf.  The clinics will cover putting, chipping, pitching and full swing.  The instructor will cover the basic fundamentals of each topic.  The instructor will also cover safety procedures and make sure the students abide by the rules.  The teacher student ratio will range from 6-8 students per instructor.

The parents will be made aware that these are clinics and not private lessons.  Just like any other sport where there are 6-8 kids on a team and one or more coaches. Each child will get a certain amount of individual instruction.  The main goal is for the kids to learn the basics of golf, have an enjoyable experience and be safe.

Putting Clinic
Instructor will demonstrate the proper grip, set up, alignment/ball position and putting stroke.  After the demonstration, the instructor will teach and check every students grip and position.  Each student will pair up with another student at a hole and putt 2 to 3 foot putts while the instructor walks around and works with each student on an individual basis.  The students will gradually move further away from the hole in small increments until they are 10-15 feet away.  The instructor will continue walking around the green working with each student.  The clinic will end with fun putting contests.  One contest will be a closest to the hole putt and one contest will be fewest putts through a putting course.  The instructor will also cover how to mark your ball properly while conducting the contest.  Students will be awarded stickers for their participation.

Chipping Clinic
Instructor will demonstrate the proper grip, set up, alignment/ball position and chipping stroke along with proper club selection.  After the demonstration, the instructor will teach and check every students grip and posture.  Each student will go to their designated area and hit chips while the instructor walks up and down the line and works with each student individually.  The first chip shot practiced will be a short chip and then they will move on to a longer chip.  PW/9 iron for short chips; 8/7 iron for long chips.  The clinic will end with fun chipping contests.  One contest will be a short chip closest to the hole and the second will be a long chip closest to the hole.  Each student will take three chips at each contest.  The instructor will also cover how to mark your ball properly while conducting the contest.  Students will be awarded a sticker for their participation.

Pitching Clinic
Instructor will demonstrate the proper grip, set up, alignment/ball position and pitching stroke along with proper club selection.  After the demonstration, the instructor will teach and check every students grip and posture.  Each student will go to their designated area and hit pitch shots while the instructor walks up and down the line and works with each student individually.  The first pitch shot practiced will be a short pitch and then move on to a longer pitch.  The clinic will end with fun pitching contests.  Students will be awarded a sticker for their participation.

Full Swing Clinic
Instructor will demonstrate the proper grip, set up, alignment/ball position and full swing shots.  After the demonstration, the instructor will teach and check every students grip and posture.  Then each student will go to their designated area and start hitting balls while the instructor walks up and down the line and works with each student individually.  The student will start by hitting short irons off of tees and gradually work to hitting the balls off of the turf.  The clinic will end in a fun full swing contest.  One contest will consist of a closest to a pin with short iron shots off of a tee and the second contest will be closest to the pin with shots off of the turf.  Each student will be awarded a sticker for their participation.

A COACH OR PARENT ASSIGNED TO EACH GROUP MUST REMAIN WITH THE GROUP THROUGH THE ENTIRE SESSION FOR THAT DAY; THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN AND THAT GOLF ETIQUETTE RULES ARE FOLLOWED.

Instructional Program: Grades 2-4

Our goal is to give every child the opportunity to learn and develop their skill in the game of golf.  The instructional division (2nd through 4th grade) will consist of five clinics that last 55 minutes followed by 3 weeks of play at the Pitch and Putt Family Golf Center.  The clinics will cover putting, chipping, pitching, full swing and an on-course lesson.  The instructor will cover the basic fundamentals of each topic.  The instructor will also cover safety procedures and make sure the students abide by the rules.  The teacher student ratio will range from 6-8 students per instructor.

On Course Lesson
Instructor will demonstrate how to start play from the teeing ground, covering where to tee off and where the players in the group that are not teeing off should stand.  After hitting off of the tee, the instructor will cover shots around and on the green.  Chip shots, putting, ball mark repair and marking a golf ball will also be demonstrated.  After the professional demonstrates he will break the kids up into 2 groups.  The first group will play a hole under the professional’s guidance after they complete the hole the second group will do the same.  It is essential that each child is not only taught the basic fundamentals of golf but also golf etiquette, good sportsmanship and golf safety.  All of these are parts of the big picture and will help these children learn at an early age how to prepare themselves and behave on the course.

FAQ’s

When are the clinics and matches?

Clinics and matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sundays, times may vary.   The schedule will not be determined until after the rosters have been completed.

On what date do the clinics and matches begin?

The official schedule is released at the end of February.  The clinics generally start in mid-March with the competitive matches beginning in late April.  Non-competitive clinics generally begin late April.

Does my son or daughter need experience?

No, the CYC Golf League is designed for beginners, even those who have never touch a club.  Certainly there are some players who excel, but the overwhelming percentage of players have little to no experience.  I would even say if your son or daughter is highly advanced, this may not be the league for you.

Will this interfere with other sports (baseball/softball)?

This is a common question.  Most likely it will.  Golf is like any other sport, there are scheduled clinics and matches.  If you miss a clinic it cannot be made up, no different than if you missed a baseball game.  Fortunately competitive players are able to make-up one (1) match.  Please ask your coach for more details.

What kind of equipment does my son or daughter require?

A set of golf clubs with a bag – these can be junior clubs or whatever you have available.   Courses do have dress codes and the children need to dress appropriately.

How much should I spend on golf clubs?

That is entirely up to you, but I would suggest not spending a lot of money on golf clubs.

They are just learning the game and they don’t swing the clubs hard enough to get huge benefits from the advanced golf technology.  Most retailers have relatively reasonably priced junior set.

Consult your local golf shop if you have more questions.

What is required from me as a parent?

Encouragement and support!

Local PGA Pros will take care of the clinics!   And your team will be assigned a coach like any other sport.  That said, we can always use coaches and team managers and need your support.
